Susan Sentler: a festa of reverie
(Piece 4, chain 1. In respose to Sophie Barth)
"a festa of reverie is a film work created for Abeerance 2021 in response to Sophie Barth’s film Happy Birday, Sister. Intrigued by various elements from Sophie’s work (birds, bird sounds, candle, a celebration), I abstracted them into a morphing collaged palette. The work was created by layering a mix of current and past still photographs and moving footage, found images, text, as well as the beautiful score by Zeekos Perakos. Through this interplay a rhythmic mesh, yielding a melancholic dream-like quality, alluding to isolation and the sensorial play emerged. The photographic stills of dancers utilised are from a work by Theo Clinkard on students from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2019, titled Now Map. I photographed these as part of a re-iteration I created/curated, a durational multi-site installation for the LASALLE Show 2019. I sourced them again for this project, stimulated by their materiality, blending a sense of flight and transparency. Overall the film collapses remnants of a celebration/a ritual, or moreover, a memory of one. A shape shifting of time and place, of bodies(bird and human), of materials/matter; a questioning of what lingers in the moment/in this moment."
